The Problem:
A law has just been passed that you believe infringes on your personal rights or is morally wrong. A response is necessary, because as Edmund Burke said, "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." It is up to you to decide how you will be an agent of societal change.
How will I do this?
Step 1: Read a definition of civil disobedience and how it connects to Antigone.
Step 2: Discover modern Antigones who have been civilly disobedient. Use their reasons and methods as inspiration when thinking through your own civil disobedience. Answer the "food for thought" questions at the bottom of each page.
Step 3: Choose a law or rule today that you believe requires an act of civil disobedience. Combining the definition, Antigone's actions, and what you have learned about the modern Antigones, create your own action plan.
Step 4: Comment on your classmates' ideas. Make a judgment call. Is civil disobedience worth it? Can one person accomplish real change?
